Objectives & Milestones
The proposal advances the following objectives (O).
- O1 Further analytical data on the paint materials and the canvases used by Munch using also the collection of reference materials available in the museum (pastels, paint tubes of different brands).
- O2 Obtaining of mock-ups imitating the structure and composition of the sketches and their artificial ageing, mimicking the weathering cycles to which the real objects were subject to.
- O3 Characterization of the crystals which are formed during the accelerated ageing.
- O4 Creation of theoretical models for the de/re-crystallization processes and predictive environmental model.
- O5 Development of novel products and solutions for treatments to be applied for the removal or stabilization of the salts.
The project defined key milestones (M) that represent novel knowledge breakthroughs and scientific resources, namely:
- M1.1 Analytical data on the composition of materials used by E. Munch in his sketches and paintings.
- M1.2 Update of the Scream digital database.
- M1.3 Workshop on Munch Painting materials.
- M2.1 Set of model samples (mock ups) reproducing the structure and composition of the canvases.
- M3.1 Analytical data on crystallization/de-crystallization of painting mock ups under accelerated ageing.
- M3.2 Update of the Scream digital database.
- M3.3 Workshop on painting degradation by salt crystallization.
- M4.1 Scientific tool for modelling the crystallization /de/re-crystallization processes.
- M4.2 Comprehensive theoretical framework on metal soaps formation in paintings.
- M5.1 Novel solutions for removal and stabilization of salts in art objects + patent registration.
- M6.1 Creation of the Scream digital database.
