Historical research has started with a survey of secondary sources in the existing digital databases and printed data collections regarding the pictorial praxis in the town Évora and its outskirts (monographies, local and national periodical articles, master and doctoral thesis) and, afterwards in primary documents from several archives and libraries such as the Archives of Évora, Beja, Montemor-o-Novo, Arquivo da Sé de Évora, Arquivo da Fundação da Casa de Bragança, Torre do Tombo. In total, more than 254 documents were revisited, analyzed and systematized. Besides the parish and notary collections, and also several collections from the Misericórdias which are documents preferred within the scope of History and Art History research, it was done a groundbreaking work in “De genere” procedures which enabled to overcome knowledge gaps concerning the artistic activity of specific painters and their family networks, and could also get new information about other painters who were still unknown. All the data collected was organized into the documental database below that release the biographic materials concerning 84 painters that have worked in Évora region between 16th and 17th c. Others outputs of historical research can be found in Papers/books in Outreach Activities.
